Account types: members and guest roles

How to pick the narrowest account for a person: full member, Multi-Channel Guest or Single-Channel Guest, what each can do by default, how guests are billed, when a Workspace Admin is enough, and why an Enterprise org account is a guest or a member everywhere.

Official exam objective
Given a use case or scenario, determine the correct level of access to grant to the user.

What the exam expects

  • Choose between a full member, a Multi-Channel Guest and a Single-Channel Guest from how many channels a person needs and whether the access may add seat cost.
  • State what a Multi-Channel Guest can and cannot do by default (private channel invites, leaving channels, user groups, apps, creating channels).
  • Pick the least powerful administrative role that covers a task, such as a Workspace Admin instead of a Workspace Owner when billing must stay off limits.
  • Apply the Enterprise org rule that one account is either a guest or a member across all its workspaces.

Key terms:

  • Full (regular) member: an account that can use every Slack feature except those limited to owners and admins.
  • Multi-Channel Guest (MCG): a paid-plan guest added to two or more specified channels, billed as a regular member.
  • Single-Channel Guest (SCG): a free paid-plan guest limited to exactly one channel.
  • Workspace Admin: an administrative role that manages members but cannot access the Billing page.
  • Enterprise org: an Enterprise organization (Enterprise Grid or Enterprise+ plan) that contains several workspaces under one set of org-level roles.
