Migrating workspaces into an Enterprise org

When a workspace migration is the right tool and how it runs: eligible plans, the Org Owner request and Primary Owner approval, seeding a new org from one workspace, pre-migration tasks, the checklist, downtime, and what members keep afterwards.

Official exam objective
Given a scenario, determine when to initiate a workspace migration into Enterprise Grid.

~7 min read · 10 practice questions ·

What the exam expects

  • Decide when migration is the tool (a workspace outside the org) versus moving channels (two workspaces already in the org).
  • Know which plans can migrate and who requests and approves a migration.
  • Sequence the first migrations into a new org so the right workspace's settings seed it.
  • Prepare a workspace: IdP provisioning, custom profile fields, guest sign-in, audit logs, SSO email matching, matching and conflicting accounts.
  • Set expectations on downtime, Slack Connect channels with the org, history and sign-in after the migration.

Key terms:

  • Enterprise org: an Enterprise organization (Enterprise Grid or Enterprise+ plan) that contains multiple workspaces.
  • Workspace migration: moving an external Free, Pro or Business+ workspace, with its members and data, into an Enterprise org.
  • Migration checklist: the Org Owner's task list in Organization settings > Workspaces > Migrations, available after the request is approved.
  • Conflicting account: a migrating account that shares some profile fields with an org account but is not an exact match.
  • Consolidation: merging workspaces that serve the same purpose; inside an org it is done by moving channels.
