The Short Answer
Most Salesforce certification exams cost US$200, and a retake costs US$100. Architect exams cost US$400 (US$200 retake). Platform Foundations costs US$75 with free retakes. Taxes are added at checkout.
If you fail, you can retake after 24 hours. After a second failure you wait 14 days, and you get three attempts per release cycle. To keep a certification active you complete one free Trailhead maintenance badge per year.
Everything below is taken from Salesforce's official pages, linked inline, and was checked in October 2026. Fees and promotions change, so confirm on Trailhead Academy before you pay.
Exam Fees by Level
| Exam type | Examples | Registration | Retake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foundations | Platform Foundations | US$75 | Free |
| Core credentials | Platform Administrator, Platform Developer, Business Analyst, Agentforce Specialist, consultant and designer exams | US$200 | US$100 |
| Architect | Platform Integration Architect, Platform Identity and Access Management Architect, Platform Data Architect | US$400 | US$200 |
| CTA: Architect Evaluation | Certified Technical Architect, step 1 | US$1,500 | US$750 |
| CTA: Review Board exam | Certified Technical Architect, step 2 | US$4,500 | US$2,250 |
| Accredited Professional | Industry and product AP exams | US$150 | US$150 |
Sources: individual exam guides (for example Platform Administrator and Platform Integration Architect), Trailhead Academy's Platform Foundations page, and the Salesforce retake policy. The retake policy states that a retake costs 50% of the original price; the CTA registration fees above follow from the retake prices it lists. Accredited Professional exams are the exception: their retakes cost the full US$150.
In Japan, core exams are priced at ¥30,000 (¥15,000 retake) and architect exams at ¥60,000 (¥30,000 retake), per the exam guides.
What a certification really costs
The exam fee is the floor. A realistic budget:
- Pass first time: US$200 for a core exam.
- Pass on the second attempt: US$300.
- Use all three attempts in a release cycle: US$400.
- Multi-exam credentials add up. For example, Application Architect requires Platform App Builder, Platform Developer, Platform Data Architect and Platform Sharing and Visibility Architect: two US$200 exams and two US$400 exams, or US$1,200 at list price before any retakes.
Studying, on the other hand, can be close to free: Trailhead, the exam guides and a Developer Edition org cost nothing. Paid practice material is optional. For comparison, a CertifyForce certification pack is a one-time US$19 (see pricing), well under the cost of one retake.
Retake Policy and Waiting Periods
From the official retake policy:
- You get 3 attempts at the same exam per release cycle.
- Fail your first attempt: wait 24 hours before registering again.
- Fail your second attempt: wait 14 days.
- Fail your third attempt: wait until the next release cycle begins.
- Attempts reset at the start of each release cycle.
Release cycle dates
Salesforce publishes the certification release cycle windows in the same article (dates subject to change):
| Release cycle | Exam launch | Exam close |
|---|---|---|
| Winter '26 | December 11, 2025 | April 19, 2026 |
| Spring '26 | April 23, 2026 | August 23, 2026 |
| Summer '26 | August 27, 2026 | December 6, 2026 |
So if you used up three attempts in the Summer '26 cycle, your next attempt opens with the next cycle after December 6, 2026.
What Happens If You Fail
- You will not see which questions you got wrong. The Certification Program Agreement and Code of Conduct states that Salesforce does not provide item-level feedback. Use whatever section-level information your result gives you to decide where to focus.
- Wait out the retake period (24 hours after a first failure, 14 days after a second).
- Pay the retake fee, which is applied automatically at checkout: Pearson adjusts the price to the retake price.
- Study the weak sections, not everything. Re-reading the whole outline costs time you could spend on the topics that actually failed you. A practice exam that reports results by section, such as our Platform Administrator practice exam, shows you exactly where to spend the time.
Do not rebook immediately just because the 24-hour wait is short. A second failure triggers a 14-day wait and uses up two of your three attempts for the cycle.
Official Discounts, Vouchers and Promotions
Only buy vouchers and discount codes through official Salesforce or Pearson channels. Voucher terms prohibit reselling or transferring codes, and they cannot be reissued if compromised.
The fall 2026 free retake promotion
Salesforce and Pearson are running a free retake promotion:
- First attempt window: register, pay for and sit an eligible exam between September 29 and November 17, 2026.
- Free retake window: if you do not pass, one free retake between January 4 and April 7, 2027.
- Eligible exams: standard full-price US$200 and US$400 exams. CTA and Accredited Professional exams are excluded.
- You must opt in first. The page says to opt in through Pearson's sign-up page by September 29, 2026, and that you must opt in before scheduling and taking your first attempt; you then enter the promo code from the confirmation email at checkout. An attempt taken without opting in does not qualify.
- Restrictions: it cannot be combined with 50% discount codes, the retake must be the same exam in the same language and delivery mode, and a no-show forfeits the free retake.
If you are booking an exam this fall, check the promotion page first to see whether you can still opt in.
Pearson VUE Exam Voucher Store
Since July 21, 2025, anyone can buy exam vouchers at full price from the Pearson VUE Salesforce Exam Voucher Store. Key terms:
- Vouchers expire 12 months after purchase, and the expiry cannot be extended.
- Each code is single-use and tied to the exam it was bought for.
- Payment by card, PayPal, wire transfer or line of credit.
This is mainly useful for employers buying for a team, or for anyone whose company reimburses vouchers rather than exam bookings.
Employer, partner and customer routes
- Partner and customer discounts: Salesforce says voucher discounts remain available to partners and customers through bulk voucher orders.
- Learning credits: if your company has Salesforce learning credits, they can be used for vouchers by logging a case (they cannot be redeemed directly in the voucher store).
- Ask your employer. Many Salesforce customers and partners pay for certification. It is worth asking before you spend your own money.
Event and community discount codes
The free retake promotion FAQ mentions existing 50% discount codes, so official discount codes do exist. Only use codes that come directly from Salesforce, Trailhead, Pearson or your employer, treat codes from anywhere else with suspicion, and expect that discounts cannot be stacked.
Maintenance: Keeping Your Certification Active
Earning a certification is not the last cost, but maintenance itself is free:
- One maintenance badge per year. All certifications require one Trailhead maintenance badge per year, on a schedule tied to the Spring, Summer or Winter release cycle. Each certification's exam guide names its badge (for example, the Platform Administrator certification maintenance badge).
- Entry-level maintenance still counts. If you earn an advanced certification, you must still complete the entry-level maintenance that maintains it. Salesforce's example: Platform Administrator maintenance maintains Platform Administrator II.
- Foundations certifications never expire and have no maintenance requirement.
- Accredited Professional certifications currently do not require annual maintenance badges.
- Do not rely on reminder emails. Salesforce says it is your responsibility to complete maintenance by the published deadline.
If your certification expires
If you miss the deadline, the certifications that badge maintains expire (or, in some cases, are suspended). If you are not eligible for reinstatement, the standard route back is to retake the full exam at full price, per the retake policy. Missing a free badge can therefore cost you US$200 or more.
Online vs. Onsite Proctoring
Every proctored Salesforce exam can be taken two ways, and the price is the same:
| Online proctored | Testing center | |
|---|---|---|
| Provider | Pearson OnVUE | Pearson VUE testing center |
| Where | Home or office, with a remote proctor via webcam | In person at a Pearson VUE facility |
| Equipment | Your own compatible computer, webcam and internet connection | Provided |
| Before you book | Check the technical requirements and run Pearson's system test | Check ID requirements; name must match your booking exactly |
You schedule both through Trailhead Academy, which hands you off to Pearson to complete the booking. If online proctoring is not offered on your account, Salesforce says you can open a support case to have it enabled, or test at a center in the meantime.
Which should you choose? Online is more convenient, but a noisy home, an unstable connection or a cluttered desk can end an exam early. If any of those are a risk, a testing center removes them.
Rescheduling and cancelling
Salesforce publishes a separate reschedule and cancellation policy with the exact windows and fees; changes made close to your appointment can cost money, so check it before you book. If you paid with a voucher and cancel, the voucher is restored and can be reused until it expires.
How to Spend Less
- Pass the first time. The cheapest exam is the one you only take once. Use a free diagnostic and timed practice before booking.
- Book during a promotion like the fall 2026 free retake offer, if you can opt in in time.
- Ask your employer about vouchers, learning credits or reimbursement.
- Start with the right exam. See which Salesforce certification to get first so you do not pay for a credential you do not need.
- Never miss maintenance. A missed free badge can mean paying the full exam fee again.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does the Salesforce Administrator exam cost?
The Platform Administrator exam costs US$200, and a retake costs US$100, plus applicable taxes. See the Platform Administrator practice exam page for the full exam facts.
How soon can I retake a Salesforce exam?
24 hours after a first failure, and 14 days after a second failure in the same release cycle. After a third failure you must wait for the next release cycle.
How many times can I take a Salesforce exam?
Three times per release cycle. Attempts reset when the next cycle begins.
Are Salesforce retakes free?
Not normally. Retakes cost 50% of the original price, except Foundations exams (free retakes) and Accredited Professional exams (full price). The fall 2026 promotion offers one free retake for eligible exams if you opted in and took your first attempt between September 29 and November 17, 2026.
Does Salesforce certification maintenance cost money?
No. Maintenance badges are completed on Trailhead at no cost. The cost comes from missing them: an expired certification generally means retaking the exam at full price.
Do Salesforce exam vouchers expire?
Yes. Vouchers bought from the Pearson VUE Salesforce Exam Voucher Store expire 12 months after purchase, and the expiry cannot be extended.
Is it cheaper to take the exam online or at a testing center?
The exam fee is the same. The difference is convenience and the risk of technical or environment problems with online proctoring.
