The Short Answer
Salesforce Certified Platform Foundations (exam Plat-101) is the entry-level Salesforce certification, and it's the exam that used to be called Salesforce Certified Associate. It has 40 scored multiple-choice questions plus up to 5 unscored, a 70-minute time limit, a 62% passing score, a US$75 fee (plus tax), free retakes and no prerequisite (checked in October 2026 against the official exam guide and Trailhead Academy).
It's built for people with up to 6 months of Salesforce user experience. The four sections are Salesforce Ecosystem (32%), Navigation (28%), Data Model (25%) and Reports & Dashboards (15%). If you're new to Salesforce, two to three weeks of steady study is a realistic plan, and the whole CertifyForce study guide and practice bank for this exam are free with an account.
Platform Foundations Is the Old Salesforce Certified Associate
If you searched for "Salesforce Certified Associate", you're in the right place. Salesforce renamed the credential to Platform Foundations, and the old Trailhead credential address, trailhead.salesforce.com/credentials/associate, now opens the Platform Foundations page. The official cert-prep module still carries the old name in its URL (Cert Prep: Salesforce Certified Platform Foundations).
What matters for your prep: the four section names, their weights and the topic bullets in the current guide match the old Associate outline. Study material written for the Associate exam still maps to this one section for section. Just check that it teaches the current product names, since several have changed (Data Cloud is now Data 360, for example).

A few things worth knowing:
- 62% of 40 scored questions means you need about 25 right. The unscored questions are mixed in at random and don't count, so treat every question as if it does.
- Retakes are free, but not instant. Salesforce's retake policy says Foundations exams have no retake fee, but you still wait 24 hours after a first failed attempt and 14 days after a second, and a third failure locks you out until the next release cycle.
- It doesn't expire. The exam guide says there's no required maintenance for Platform Foundations at this time.
For how this compares with every other Salesforce exam fee, see Salesforce certification cost and retake fees.
Who Should Take Platform Foundations
Salesforce describes the candidate as someone who may be new to the ecosystem, is familiar with Salesforce "as a user or a learner", and understands reporting, user administration, sharing, customization and data management at a foundational level, per Trailhead Academy.
It's a good fit if you:
- Are switching careers into Salesforce and want a first credential on your profile
- Use Salesforce at work as a sales rep, service agent or ops person and want to understand the platform behind it
- Are paying for exams yourself and want a low-cost, low-risk first pass
- Want a confidence builder before Platform Administrator
You can skip it if you already configure Salesforce every day. It isn't a prerequisite for anything, so experienced users usually go straight to Platform Administrator. Our guide to which Salesforce certification to get first covers that choice in more detail.
The Four Exam Sections and What They Test
The outline below comes from the official exam guide. Questions are short and lightly scenario-based. They test whether you can recognize the right feature, product or resource, not whether you can configure it step by step.
Salesforce Ecosystem: 32%
The biggest section, and the one people underestimate. It covers:
- Resources for learning Salesforce skills (Trailhead, Trailhead Playgrounds, the Trailblazer Community)
- Which Customer 360 product fits a use case (sales, service, marketing, commerce, experience sites)
- How companies use Salesforce
- Job roles and career paths, such as admin, developer, consultant and business analyst
Watch for: product-matching questions. Read the business need, then pick the product built for it. Mixing up a Trailhead Playground with a production org is another common slip.
Navigation: 28%
- How a user finds and opens information: global search, the App Launcher, the navigation bar, favorites, list views and record pages
- Where customization happens: Setup, Object Manager and Lightning App Builder
Watch for: questions that confuse a list view with a report, or the record page with Setup. If the user wants to change how Salesforce works for everyone, the answer is almost always in Setup.
Data Model: 25%
- How the core standard objects relate: account, contact, lead, opportunity and case
- Which feature controls who can see data (org-wide defaults, roles, sharing rules, profiles and permission sets)
- Which tool protects data quality (validation rules, required fields, picklists, duplicate rules)
Watch for: page layouts versus field-level security. A page layout changes where a field appears; field-level security decides whether a user can see it at all. Also know what happens when a lead is converted: it becomes an account, a contact and (optionally) an opportunity.
Reports & Dashboards: 15%
- What reports are: report types, formats and filters
- What dashboards are: components, the running user and refresh
It's the smallest section, but with only 40 questions, six or so come from here. Build one report and one dashboard in a free org and these become easy points.
A Two-to-Three-Week Study Plan
- Read the exam guide once. Spend ten minutes on the official outline so you know the four sections and what each bullet asks for.
- Take a baseline check. Try the 18 free Platform Foundations practice questions before you study. They're picked across all four sections by weight, with answers and explanations, and they show you where you're starting from.
- Work through the official prep. The credential page links Salesforce's recommended trailmix (Prepare for Your Salesforce Platform Foundations Certification) and the cert-prep module. Do the hands-on units in a Trailhead Playground.
- Study by weight. Put about a third of your time into Salesforce Ecosystem, then Navigation, then Data Model, and finish with Reports & Dashboards.
- Click through a real org. Open Setup and Object Manager, create a list view, convert a test lead, and build one report and dashboard. Recognizing screens is half of the Navigation section.
- Practice under time. 70 minutes for up to 45 questions is about 1.5 minutes each. Do at least one full timed run and review every miss until you can say why each wrong option is wrong.
- Book the exam when you're scoring well above 62% in practice. Free retakes take the pressure off, but the waiting periods still cost you time.

What Comes After Platform Foundations
For most people the next step is Platform Administrator. Platform Foundations already covers the vocabulary that exam builds on: standard objects, sharing, data quality, reports and dashboards. Admin goes deeper and expects you to configure them, not just recognize them.
Our Salesforce Platform Administrator study guide walks through the current outline and a study plan, and the Platform Administrator practice exam lets you test yourself against it.

How much does Platform Foundations cost?
US$75 (JPY 10,000) plus applicable taxes, and retakes are free, per Trailhead Academy and the retake policy.
