Workspace migration lifecycle into an Enterprise org

End to end, how a Free, Pro or Business+ workspace moves into an Enterprise org: who requests and approves, the migration checklist, what data lands at org versus workspace level, the downtime, open and reindexing phases, and what changes afterwards for settings, Slack Connect channels and the Primary Owner role.

Official exam objective
Understand the end-to-end migration process and gain the ability to lead client migrations.

What the exam expects

  • Explain why a client migrates (sprawl, an acquisition, one set of policies) and when to deliver the migration overview.
  • Say who sends and who approves a migration request, and complete the checklist that unlocks scheduling.
  • Sort data into org level and workspace level, and list what members keep after the migration.
  • Describe the hard downtime, open and reindexing phases and where downtime estimates come from.
  • Predict what happens to conflicting settings, Slack Connect channels with the org, the Primary Owner role and the first workspace's settings.

Key terms:

  • Enterprise org: an Enterprise organization (Enterprise Grid or Enterprise+ plan) that holds many workspaces under one set of policies.
  • Migration checklist: the Org Owner's to-do list on the migration detail page; scheduling unlocks only when it is complete.
  • Exact match / partial match: a migrating account that fully matches an org account (merge) or shares only some profile fields (a conflict to resolve).
  • Reindexing: the post-migration phase in which migrated data is indexed and search may be incomplete.
