The Short Answer
The Salesforce Certified Marketing Cloud Engagement Specialist exam (formerly Marketing Cloud Email Specialist) has 60 scored multiple-choice questions plus up to 5 unscored, a 90-minute time limit, a 67% passing score, a US$200 registration fee (US$100 to retake) and no prerequisite, though Salesforce highly recommends the MKT 101 course. Its questions align to the Summer '23 release (checked in November 2026 against the official exam guide).
It's the exam for the marketer who builds and sends: creating emails in Content Builder, modeling data in data extensions, automating with Automation Studio and Journey Builder, and reading the results. Subscriber and Data Management and Marketing Automation are the two biggest sections at 26% each.

Use the official 67% passing score as the requirement, not an exact allowance of missed questions; additional unscored questions do not affect your result. 90 minutes for up to 65 questions is under 1.4 minutes each, tighter than most Salesforce exams, so don't linger. Many objectives use a customer scenario or desired outcome, so practice short marketer stories ending in "which tool or setting should the specialist use?" About the name change
Salesforce renamed the credential on July 24, 2026. Its Certification Name Changes FAQ lists Marketing Cloud Email Specialist becoming Marketing Cloud Engagement Specialist, says the exam content and annual maintenance didn't change, and says you don't need to re-earn a certification you already hold. Older prep material still says "Email Specialist", and the Trailmix URL still uses the old slug, so search under both names.
Who the Exam Is For (and Who It Isn't)
The exam guide describes someone with at least 6 months of experience using the Marketing Cloud Email application, who builds campaigns with a content system, segmentation, automation, tracking and analytics, and can troubleshoot basic Marketing Cloud issues. You should be able to:
- build campaigns in Email Studio, including Content Builder
- build relational data models
- send emails with the application's sending methods
- automate with Automation Studio and Journey Builder
- report on email tracking data
- use Marketing Cloud Einstein for AI-driven personalization
You need a basic understanding of AMPscript, GTL, SSJS, HTML and CSS, but not in-depth development skills or custom API integrations.
Don't confuse it with the Marketing Cloud Engagement Administrator credential. The Specialist is the email marketer who builds, sends and measures campaigns. The Administrator owns account setup and configuration: its exam guide gives Setup 38% of the exam, including business units, users, permissions and security. If your day job is writing and launching emails and journeys, the Specialist is your exam.
The Five Exam Sections and What They Test
All weights and objectives come from the official outline.
| Section | Weight | About this many questions (of 60) |
|---|---|---|
| Email Marketing Best Practices | 10% | 6 |
| Content Creation and Delivery | 24% | 14 |
| Marketing Automation | 26% | 16 |
| Subscriber and Data Management | 26% | 16 |
| Insights and Analytics | 14% | 8 |
Email Marketing Best Practices (10%)
Designing effective emails and programs, the elements that affect deliverability, and subscriber acquisition and retention.
Watch for: authentication and sending volume. Salesforce's bulk sender guidelines addendum says domains set up as a Sender Authentication Package (SAP) or Private Domain meet Gmail and Yahoo's authentication requirements with SPF, DKIM and DMARC, that adding an email address or registering a domain in From Address Management doesn't authenticate it, and that commercial messages include one-click unsubscribe by default through List-Unsubscribe headers. The dedicated IP article says accounts sending more than 250,000 emails a month must have a dedicated IP address.
Content Creation and Delivery (24%)
Choosing tools to prepare an email for send, building and customizing the message, configuring send settings, and organizing content.
Watch for: Classic Content. Salesforce's retirement notice says Classic Content was retired on April 24, 2023, and since then emails and content can only be created, edited and viewed in Content Builder. Classic creation tools, templates, content areas and Portfolio are no longer available in the interface. The notice preserves SOAP API access and already-running automations and triggered sends, so distinguish retired creation tools from those documented exceptions.
Watch for: the send classification and its parts. The send classifications page says a send classification bundles a sender profile (the From name and address), a delivery profile and a CAN-SPAM classification of Commercial or Transactional. Commercial messages must include an unsubscribe mechanism and the sender's physical address. A transactional classification can choose whether to honor the list's opt-outs; if it doesn't, the email carries no unsubscribe link. A scenario about a receipt that must reach someone who unsubscribed from promotions is about the transactional classification, not a new list.
Marketing Automation (26%)
Recommending the right automation tool, building Automation Studio solutions and building Journey Builder solutions.
Watch for: Automation Studio versus Journey Builder. Salesforce's journeys and automations overview describes Automation Studio as the tool that automates sends, queries, imports and other marketing and data tasks on a schedule or trigger, and Journey Builder as the campaign planning tool that guides each customer through a multistep communication plan. "Import a file every night and refresh a segment" is Automation Studio. "Welcome new subscribers with three emails spaced by behavior" is Journey Builder. Many real solutions use both: an automation prepares the data and a journey sends the messages.
Subscriber and Data Management (26%)
Setting up data extensions, importing data, configuring segmentation, and troubleshooting send discrepancies caused by subscriber preferences.
Watch for: lists versus data extensions. The list versus data extension page recommends lists for 500,000 subscribers or fewer when you prefer simplicity, and data extensions when you go beyond 500,000, need fast imports, use triggered sends or the APIs, send global messages or support several subscriber datasets. To send to a data extension, the data extension setup page says to select Is Sendable and relate a field to subscriber data. A data extension that isn't sendable can still hold lookup or relational data.
Watch for: "why didn't this person get the email?" Opt-outs, list status and suppression decide it. The send classifications page spells out which sends exclude unsubscribed subscribers, including the trap that a triggered send with no associated list can't track unsubscribes. The suppression list page covers how subscribers land on a suppression list.
Insights and Analytics (14%)
Email metrics and what they mean, analyzing campaign results, ad hoc and automated reports, and recommending an Einstein product.
Watch for: which Einstein feature answers which question. Salesforce's Einstein feature overview maps them: Engagement Scoring predicts how likely a contact is to engage, Send Time Optimization picks the best send time, Engagement Frequency finds the right number of messages, Copy Insights analyzes subject-line language, and Content Selection picks the best content asset for each contact. The same page says Einstein needs at least 7 days of engagement history, recommends 28 and calls 90 optimal.
What Changed Since Summer '23
The guide aligns to Summer '23, while today's Help documents the current product. Use the name Marketing Cloud Engagement for the platform; Email Studio, Content Builder, Journey Builder, Automation Studio and Contact Builder keep their names. Learn tools by what they do rather than by menu path, because the interface has moved since the guide was written. And remember the Classic Content retirement above: older third-party question sets still mark Classic emails or Portfolio as correct.
A Five-to-Seven-Week Study Plan
- Read the exam guide and score yourself. Rate each of the 18 objectives from 1 to 3. Our guide to using the exam outline to plan your study shows how to turn weights into a study budget: more than half belongs to data and automation.
- Take a baseline. Try the 18 free Marketing Cloud Engagement Specialist practice questions to see the scenario style and find your weakest section.
- Work the official Trailmix. The exam guide recommends Prepare for Your Salesforce Certified Marketing Cloud Engagement Specialist Certification and the instructor-led course Build and Analyze Customer Journeys using Marketing Cloud (MKT 101).
- Build one campaign end to end. A sendable data extension, an import, a filtered segment, a Content Builder email with dynamic content, a send classification, and a two-email journey. Then read the tracking. Every section of the outline shows up in that one exercise.
- Make a decision sheet. List versus data extension, sendable versus not, Automation Studio versus Journey Builder, user-initiated versus triggered sends, sender profile versus delivery profile versus send classification, and the five Einstein features.
- Practice under time. With under 1.4 minutes a question, timed practice matters. Book the exam when you're comfortably above 67%. Our guide to answering Salesforce scenario questions helps you find the one constraint that decides each stem.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many questions are on the Marketing Cloud Engagement Specialist exam?
60 scored multiple-choice questions plus up to 5 unscored ones, in 90 minutes, with a 67% passing score, per the exam guide.
Is it the same exam as Marketing Cloud Email Specialist?
Yes. Salesforce renamed the credential on July 24, 2026, and its name changes FAQ says the content and maintenance didn't change. If you already hold it, you don't need to re-earn it.
Does the exam have a prerequisite?
No. The guide lists none, but it highly recommends attending MKT 101 and describes a candidate with at least 6 months of hands-on experience.
Do I need to know AMPscript?
Only the basics. The guide asks for a basic understanding of AMPscript, GTL, SSJS, HTML and CSS, and says you don't need in-depth development skills.
Should I take the Specialist or the Administrator exam first?
If you build and send campaigns, start with the Specialist; it tests the tools you use every day. The Administrator exam focuses on account setup and configuration, which suits the person who manages the Marketing Cloud account.
How do I keep the certification?
Complete the Marketing Cloud Engagement Specialist maintenance badge on Trailhead once a year. The Trailhead maintenance schedule is where to check the current deadline for your credential. If you miss the due date, the certification expires.
