The Short Answer

The Salesforce Certified B2C Commerce Developer exam has 60 scored multiple-choice questions plus up to 5 unscored, a 105-minute time limit, a 65% passing score, a US$200 registration fee (US$100 to retake) and no prerequisite. Its questions align to the Spring '23 release (checked in November 2026 against the official exam guide).

It's a developer exam with a heavy code half: Application Development is 53% of the score, so ISML templates, SFRA controllers, forms, hooks, services and jobs decide most results. The other 47% is Business Manager work a developer does every day: cartridge paths, site setup, search configuration, custom attributes and objects, logging and OCAPI permissions.

You get about 1.6 minutes for each of up to 65 items. Many questions show a short controller, ISML or job snippet, so reading speed matters as much as recall. For fees and retake rules across all Salesforce exams, see Salesforce certification cost and retake fees.

Who the Exam Is For

The exam guide targets ecommerce developers with at least 1 year of developer experience plus 3-6 months in a B2C Commerce developer role. It lists front-end, full-stack, software and web application developers, JavaScript or Java programmers and support engineers as typical candidates.

You'll see the credential called "B2C Commerce Cloud Developer" in older prep material and some Trailhead pages. This post uses the name on the current exam guide.

The skills list reads like a job description: install the SFRA sample site, set up an IDE that uploads code, build cartridges, write controllers and ISML, create custom objects, run import and export jobs, and use Node and Git. If you've only read about B2C Commerce, get a sandbox and build something before you book.

The Four Exam Sections and What They Test

SectionWeight
B2C Commerce Setup11%
Work With a B2C Site12%
Data Management Using Business Manager Usage24%
Application Development53%

Weights are from the exam guide. Almost every objective starts with "Given a ... requirement", so expect short scenarios that end in what you should configure or code.

B2C Commerce Setup (11%)

Connect an IDE to a sandbox over WebDAV, deploy cartridges to the right code version, import data through the Business Manager Import/Export modules, create a new site with its default currency and taxation type, and set the cartridge path.

The cartridge path is the classic trap. The Cartridges documentation says you enter cartridge names separated by colons, and "cartridges take precedence in order from left to right." Your custom cartridge goes to the left of app_storefront_base, or your override never runs.

Work With a B2C Site (12%)

This section is Business Manager configuration: the product data model with catalogs, categories, inventory and price books; payment and shipping settings that let a shopper finish checkout; and content assets, content slots, content folders and Page Designer. Know how a storefront catalog differs from a master catalog, and which object holds a price versus a stock level.

Data Management Using Business Manager Usage (24%)

Search preferences, search refinements and sorting rules, logging categories, custom attributes on system objects, custom objects, performance tools such as cache settings and profilers, OCAPI permissions for the Shop and Data APIs, and service configurations.

Two traps come up often:

  • Custom attribute or custom object? If you're adding a field to something that already exists (a product, a customer address, site preferences), extend the system object with a custom attribute. Only data with no system object home needs a custom object. The custom object documentation also says to create custom object types on a staging instance and replicate them, because replication removes types defined directly on development or production.
  • Logging is off until you turn it on. Per the log files overview, custom debug and info logs are disabled by default and are enabled under Custom Log Settings in Business Manager. Each application server can write up to 10 MB per day into each custom log file, after which logging stops until the next GMT day.

Application Development (53%)

More than half the exam. The objectives cover ISML (local and remote includes, components, other tags), debugging scripts and controllers, extending SFRA controllers with models, decorators, factories and helpers, Page Designer page and component types, forms with validation and CSRF protection, localization, custom logging, services, hooks, best-practice code review, OCAPI integrations and custom job steps.

What the documentation stresses, and the exam tests:

  • Remote includes cost a request. The remote includes documentation says each remote include is an additional request to the application server and can be cached on its own. That's why you use one for a fragment with a different cache policy, and a local include for everything else.
  • Never catch a quota exception. Governance and Quotas says an enforced quota throws an exception that stops the operation, and tells you not to catch it in a customization. Design to avoid the violation instead. A snippet that wraps a quota breach in try/catch is the wrong answer.
  • CSRF is SFRA middleware. The SFRA forms documentation shows csrfProtection.generateToken when rendering the form and csrfProtection.validateAjaxRequest as the middleware step that checks it.
  • Services need three configurations. The web services documentation requires a service, a service profile and a service credential in Business Manager. Code gets the service with LocalServiceRegistry.createService, and the profile controls timeouts, rate limits and the circuit breaker.
  • Custom job steps live in a cartridge. Custom job steps are task-oriented or chunk-oriented CommonJS modules described in one steptypes.json (or .xml) file at the cartridge root.
  • Page Designer splits the work. Per Page Designer for developers, developers build the page types and component types in a cartridge, and merchants assemble pages from them in the Business Manager visual editor.

Is the Exam Still Current?

The exam aligns to Spring '23, and everything in its outline (SFRA, cartridges, ISML, JavaScript controllers, hooks, jobs, Page Designer, OCAPI) is still in the product. One thing has moved since: Salesforce's Why Use SCAPI page says OCAPI is marked deprecated as of April 2026 and that new features go to the Salesforce Commerce API (SCAPI).

For the exam, answer as the guide asks: configure OCAPI Shop and Data API permissions and hooks when a question names them. For real projects, learn SCAPI next. Business Manager screens now carry newer product branding too, so match on the setting's purpose rather than the exact menu label you memorized.

A Six-to-Ten-Week Study Plan

  1. Read the exam guide and score yourself. Rate each objective from 1 to 3. Our guide to using the exam outline to plan your study shows how to turn a 53% section into study hours.
  2. Take a baseline. Try the 18 free B2C Commerce Developer practice questions to see the scenario and snippet style and find your weakest section.
  3. Set up a sandbox. Install the SFRA sample site, connect your IDE over WebDAV, and upload a custom cartridge on the left of the path. Do the Develop for Salesforce B2C Commerce trail and the modules the exam guide lists.
  4. Spend half your time on Application Development. Extend a controller with server.append, add a form with CSRF protection, write a remote include, call a service and build a custom job step.
  5. Work Business Manager for a week. Add a custom attribute, create a custom object type, build a search refinement and a sorting rule, turn on custom logging and set OCAPI permissions.
  6. Review code for best practices. Practise spotting caught quota exceptions, sensitive data in logs, uncached remote includes and cartridge paths in the wrong order.
  7. Practice under time. Book the exam when you're steadily above 65% and can explain why each distractor fails. Our guide to answering Salesforce scenario questions helps with select-two items.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are on the B2C Commerce Developer exam?

60 scored multiple-choice questions plus up to 5 unscored ones, in 105 minutes, with a 65% passing score, per the exam guide. Unscored questions are mixed in and don't affect your result.

How much does the B2C Commerce Developer exam cost?

US$200 to register and US$100 to retake (JPY 30,000 and 15,000), plus applicable taxes, per the exam guide. The Trailhead Academy page lists the same prices.

Do I need another certification first?

No. The guide lists no prerequisite. It does expect a year of developer experience and 3-6 months working in B2C Commerce, and that hands-on time matters more than any earlier credential.

Which section should I study most?

Application Development, at 53%. It's worth more than the other three sections combined, and its questions are where code snippets appear. Data Management Using Business Manager Usage is next at 24%.

Does the exam test SCAPI or headless storefronts?

The outline names OCAPI, SFRA and Page Designer, not SCAPI. The guide does recommend the Headless Commerce Basics module, so know what headless means, but answer integration questions with the OCAPI Shop and Data APIs the outline lists.

How do I keep the certification?

Complete the B2C Commerce Developer maintenance badge on Trailhead once a year, per the exam guide. If you miss the due date, the certification expires.
