Pipeline progression and stage velocity

The stages a deal moves through, the sales velocity formula and its four levers, and how time in stage, monthly measurement and transparent reviews expose bottlenecks and stalled deals early.

Official exam objective
Explain pipe progression and stage velocity.

What the exam expects

  • Place a deal in the right pipeline stage from what the buyer is doing (for example, objections to scope and price after a proposal mean negotiation).
  • Calculate sales velocity and say which of its four inputs an action raises or lowers.
  • Find the bottleneck stage from average days in stage and decide what to fix first.
  • Restart a deal that has sat in one stage far longer than usual, without discounting or marking it won.
  • Catch slowing deals before quarter end with monthly measurement, weekly change tracking and transparent reviews.

Key terms:

  • Pipeline stage: a step a prospect passes through on the way to becoming a customer.
  • Sales velocity: the rate leads move through the funnel, measured as revenue per period: (opportunities × deal value × win rate) / sales cycle length.
  • Win rate: the share of opportunities that become paying customers in the period, also called conversion rate.
  • Sales cycle length: the average time from a qualified lead to a paying customer.
  • Bottleneck: a stage where deals stall, signalled by low velocity.

Indicates pipeline bottlenecks
After Proposal
Detail
