Design and Troubleshoot Calculations and Workbooks40% of the exam
Order of operations effects on calculation results
Predict what a calculation returns from where it sits in Tableau's query pipeline: FIXED before dimension filters, INCLUDE and EXCLUDE after them, measure filters at the view's level of detail, totals and clusters after measure filters, and table calculation filters and reference lines at the very end.
Identify the effect of the Tableau order of operations on calculations.
~7 min read · 8 practice questions ·
What the exam expects
- Place each filter type and calculation in Tableau's order of operations and predict which filters a calculation sees.
- Predict how a dimension filter changes FIXED versus INCLUDE and EXCLUDE results, including ratios that use an LOD denominator.
- Predict what measure filters do to totals, clusters and INCLUDE averages, and when a FIXED-based filter is needed instead.
- Use a table calculation filter to hide rows while percentages, ranks and totals keep their full denominator, and know that reference lines follow it.
- Choose filter card options such as All Values in Context when a context filter is present.
Key terms:
- Order of operations (query pipeline): the fixed order in which Tableau performs filters and calculations.
- Context filter: a categorical filter computed first, so other filters process only the data that passes it.
- Dimension filter: a filter on rows, comparable to a SQL WHERE clause.
- Measure filter: a filter on an aggregated value, comparable to a SQL HAVING clause.
- Table calculation filter: a calculated field containing a table calculation placed on Filters; it hides marks after calculations run.
Key facts
FIXED and filters
- Detail
- Ignores all filters except context, data source and extract filters
INCLUDE and EXCLUDE
- Detail
- Considered after dimension filters
Measure filter analogy
- Detail
- SQL HAVING clause; dimension filter is WHERE
Totals and clusters
- Detail
- Computed after measure filters, with forecasts and table calcs
Top N filter
- Detail
- Treated as a dimension filter in the page's Example 1, so it runs simultaneously with general dimension filters and before table calcs
Table calculation filters
- Detail
- Applied last; do not filter out underlying data
Trend and reference lines
- Detail
- After table calculation filters
Which filters can be context
- Detail
- Categorical filters only
All Values in Context
- Detail
- Tableau Desktop only; lists values passing the context filter
