What inclusive design is and how it differs from universal design and accessibility standards; the three principles; the social definition of disability; the cycle of exclusion, exclusion habits and ability bias; exclusion experts, thick data and the persona spectrum; the business and leadership case; and Consequence Scanning from Ethics by Design.

- Certification: Salesforce Platform User Experience Designer
- Exam section: Human-Centered Design
- Study guide: https://www.certifyforce.com/study-guide/user-experience-designer

**Official exam objective:**

> Explain the importance of inclusive design.

## What the exam expects

- Define inclusive design and distinguish it from universal design and from meeting accessibility standards.
- Name the three inclusive design principles and explain the social definition of disability.
- Identify the five elements of the cycle of exclusion, exclusion habits and ability bias, and replace them with inclusive practices (exclusion experts, codesign, thick data, the persona spectrum).
- Make the business case for inclusion and describe how leaders support it.
- Recommend Consequence Scanning to find unintended consequences before building.
- Key terms: **mismatch** (a barrier to how people fit the physical or digital world); **exclusion expert** (someone with lived experience of exclusion); **ability bias** (using your own abilities as the baseline); **persona spectrum** (a continuum of human dimensions); **thick data** (how people feel, think and react, and why).
