# Data Mapper naming, caching and performance practices

The Data Mapper best practices a developer applies while building: unique response node names, the camelCase naming convention, targeted Data Mappers with few sObjects and indexed filters, the null-equals filter workaround, and the Options-tab cache settings with their TTL defaults and limits.

**Official exam objective:**

> Describe best practices for Data Mappers.

## What the exam expects

- Give Data Mappers and their response nodes names that are unique and follow the documented convention.
- Keep Data Mappers targeted and fast: one operation, relationship notation, three or fewer sObjects, indexed filter and sort fields, and the null-equals workaround.
- Configure caching on the Options tab: cache type, Time To Live In Minutes, and how field-level security checks affect it.

Key terms: **response node** (the top-level output name a Data Mapper writes into the caller's data), **prefixVerbObjectDetail** (Trailhead's camelCase naming pattern), **Salesforce Platform Cache Type** (None, Session Cache or Org Cache), **Time To Live In Minutes** (how long cached data is kept).

## Key facts

| Fact | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Response nodes | Unique names across Data Mappers | [Best Practices](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?language=en_US&id=xcloud.os_dataraptor_best_practices_47412.htm&type=5) |
| Data Mapper name | Trailhead: starts with a letter; letters and numbers only. Help Interface Name: letters, numbers and dashes, no spaces | [Design for Performance](https://trailhead.salesforce.com/content/learn/modules/omnistudio-data-mapper-fundamentals/design-data-mappers-for-performance) |
| Naming pattern | camelCase prefixVerbObjectDetail | [Design for Performance](https://trailhead.salesforce.com/content/learn/modules/omnistudio-data-mapper-fundamentals/design-data-mappers-for-performance) |
| sObjects per Data Mapper | Three or fewer | [Best Practices](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?language=en_US&id=xcloud.os_dataraptor_best_practices_47412.htm&type=5) |
| Equals null filter | Add a `!=` filter as well | [Best Practices](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?language=en_US&id=xcloud.os_dataraptor_best_practices_47412.htm&type=5) |
| Org Cache TTL | Default 1440, maximum 2880 minutes | [Caching](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=xcloud.os_configure_caching_for_data_mappers.htm&language=en_US&type=5) |
| Session Cache TTL | Default 5, maximum 480 minutes | [Caching](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=xcloud.os_configure_caching_for_data_mappers.htm&language=en_US&type=5) |
| FLS check | Disables Org Cache, not Session Cache | [Configure an Extract](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=xcloud.os_define_the_initial_extraction_45906.htm&language=en_US&type=5) |

## Check yourself

- Why does Help recommend keeping a Data Mapper to three or fewer sObjects?
- When does an Extract filter need an extra Not Equal To condition?
- What TTL does Org Cache use if you leave Time To Live In Minutes at its default?
- Why can Session Cache data disappear before its TTL ends?
- When is Session Cache the better choice than Org Cache?
