The three stages of MuleSoft's product-centric API lifecycle and the steps inside each (design, simulate, feedback and validate; build and test; secure, deploy, monitor, troubleshoot and manage), traced through MuleSoft's build-an-API tutorial.

- Certification: Salesforce MuleSoft Integration Foundations
- Exam section: Identify the roles, responsibilities, and lifecycle of a integration project
- Study guide: https://www.certifyforce.com/study-guide/mulesoft-integration-foundations

**Official exam objective:**

> Identify and describe the steps of the design, implement, and management stages of MuleSoft's recommended product-centric API lifecycle.

## What the exam expects

- Put the three product-centric lifecycle stages in order: design, implementation, management.
- Place a task in its stage, including the four design tasks, the two implementation steps and the five management steps.
- Explain why a mock, an interactive console and developer feedback belong to design, not implementation.
- Describe what MuleSoft's tutorial does first in design (explore existing specs in Exchange) and how it continues through build, test, deploy and monitor.

Key terms:
- **Full lifecycle API management**: overseeing an API from its creation to retirement across its full life span.
- **API contract**: the "user interface" of the API, how it looks and behaves, created first in a design-first approach.
- **API spec**: a definition of an API's functional and expected behavior that people and software can read.
- **Mocking Service**: the API Console feature that tests a spec before it is implemented.

## Check yourself

- Why does the tutorial remove `-SNAPSHOT` from the project version before deploying?
- When the tutorial tests a spec before implementing it, which feature does it use?
- Which three aspects of an application building block does MuleSoft say each have a unique lifecycle?
- What does the Simulate task of design model?
