# ESB, iPaaS and API management technology classes

*MuleSoft Integration Foundations Study Guide · Recognize common integration problems, use cases, and technical solutions · Last updated November 2, 2026 · https://www.certifyforce.com/study-guide/mulesoft-integration-foundations/integration-problems-use-cases-and-technical-solutions/esb-ipaas-and-api-management-technology-classes*

What each class of integration technology is for: the ESB as a bus architecture with routing, transformation and protocol services, iPaaS as cloud-native integration, full lifecycle API management for governing APIs, and message queuing for asynchronous exchange.

- Exam section: Recognize common integration problems, use cases, and technical solutions
- Study guide: https://www.certifyforce.com/study-guide/mulesoft-integration-foundations

**Official exam objective:**

> Describe the purpose and function of the different classes of integration technologies.

## What the exam expects

- Describe the ESB's core concept (a bus between applications) and its principles: adapters, canonical format, statelessness.
- Name the core ESB services, such as routing, transformation, protocol conversion and enhancement, from a described behaviour.
- Describe iPaaS and its functional components, and contrast it with an ESB and traditional middleware.
- Explain why iPaaS and full lifecycle API management are not interchangeable.
- Describe what a message queuing service adds to an integration landscape.

Key terms:
- **Middleware**: in a broad sense, any software that sits between two apps.
- **ESB**: an architecture for enterprise application integration over a bus-like infrastructure.
- **iPaaS**: cloud-based integration software connecting applications, data and systems across cloud and on-premises environments.
- **Full lifecycle API management**: overseeing APIs from design and publishing through documentation, analysis, security and governance.
- **Message queue**: a broker where one app publishes a message so another can consume it asynchronously.

## Key facts

| Fact | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| ESB bus technology | Usually a messaging server such as JMS or AMQP | [What is an ESB?](https://www.mulesoft.com/integration/what-is-esb) |
| ESB canonical format | Almost always XML; the contract between systems | [What is an ESB?](https://www.mulesoft.com/integration/what-is-esb) |
| ESB state | Generally stateless; state is embedded in messages | [What is an ESB?](https://www.mulesoft.com/integration/what-is-esb) |
| ESB availability | Multiple ESB instances increase throughput and remove single points of failure | [What is an ESB?](https://www.mulesoft.com/integration/what-is-esb) |
| iPaaS components | Connectors, workflow orchestration, API management, data transformation, event-driven architecture | [What is iPaaS?](https://www.mulesoft.com/integration/ipaas-integration-platform-as-a-service) |
| iPaaS infrastructure | No hardware or middleware to install or manage | [iPaaS vs API management](https://www.mulesoft.com/integration/ipaas-vs-full-lifecycle-api-management) |
| iPaaS vs API management | Not interchangeable; both are needed | [iPaaS vs API management](https://www.mulesoft.com/integration/ipaas-vs-full-lifecycle-api-management) |
