Choose useful logging content and destinations, understand asynchronous audit tradeoffs, and diagnose the active Log4j configuration without confusing application and runtime logs.

- Certification: Salesforce MuleSoft Developer II
- Exam section: Implement monitorable Mule applications
- Study guide: https://www.certifyforce.com/study-guide/mulesoft-developer-ii

**Official exam objective:**

> Implement effective logging.

## What the exam expects

- Write operational messages that support a specific investigation.
- Configure message severity and category independently.
- Balance log processing cost against the required audit reliability.
- Distinguish application configuration, runtime logging and agent state output.

A **Logger** emits a message from the flow; a **category** identifies a logging namespace; an **appender** writes to a destination; a **layout** formats an entry; **asynchronous logging** writes on a separate thread. These mechanisms are described here for Mule4.6.

## Key facts

| Fact | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Logger message | Can combine literal strings and DataWeave expressions. | [Logger component](https://docs.mulesoft.com/mule-runtime/4.6/logger-component-reference) |
| Category | Can route messages or configure category-level severity. | [Logger component](https://docs.mulesoft.com/mule-runtime/4.6/logger-component-reference) |
| Full payloads | Can bypass streaming and increase disk I/O. | [Logging performance](https://docs.mulesoft.com/mule-runtime/4.6/tuning-logging) |
| Async crash window | Buffered messages may be missing after a crash. | [Configuring logging](https://docs.mulesoft.com/mule-runtime/4.6/logging-in-mule) |
| Extra Async scope | Duplicates thread/resource demands for already asynchronous logging. | [Logging performance](https://docs.mulesoft.com/mule-runtime/4.6/tuning-logging) |
| App override | `logConfigFile` selects the application configuration path. | [Configuring logging](https://docs.mulesoft.com/mule-runtime/4.6/logging-in-mule) |
| Agent destination | Agent1.5.2+ recognizes `mule-agent-appender`. | [Configuring logging](https://docs.mulesoft.com/mule-runtime/4.6/logging-in-mule) |
| Startup diagnostic | Prints the selected Log4j2 configuration location to stdout. | [Configuring logging](https://docs.mulesoft.com/mule-runtime/4.6/logging-in-mule) |

## Check yourself

- Why should the suggested asynchronous ring-buffer size be evaluated against the workload?
- When selecting a custom asynchronous logging exception handler, what value identifies the implementation?
- Which interface must that custom handler implement?
