# Resolving conflicts to reach stakeholder consensus

*Business Analyst Study Guide · Collaboration with Stakeholders · Last updated October 15, 2026 · https://www.certifyforce.com/study-guide/business-analyst/collaboration-with-stakeholders/resolving-conflicts-to-reach-stakeholder-consensus*

How a BA facilitates (not dictates) agreement when stakeholders compete: joint prioritization against agreed criteria, evidence-based sessions with the sponsor and SMEs, escalation with documented options when deadlocked, trade-off conversations for late 'critical' requests, and decision records, sign-off and decision rights that stop agreements being reopened.

**Official exam objective:**

> Given a scenario, manage competing priorities to obtain stakeholder consensus.

## What the exam expects

- Move competing stakeholders to a decision by facilitating joint prioritization against criteria agreed in advance (value, impact, effort, risk), not by seniority, submission order or splitting the difference.
- Bring the sponsor and subject matter experts together with evidence when a mandate conflicts with a must-have, and escalate a genuine deadlock with documented options.
- Handle a late or mid-iteration "critical" request: assess impact, present the trade-off, re-prioritize before accepting.
- Record decisions (decision, rationale, options, who agreed), obtain sign-off, and agree decision rights and communication up front to prevent late rejection.

Key terms: **facilitator** (runs the process that reaches a decision; does not own the decision); **decision rights** (who is accountable for deciding and who must be informed); **trade-off** (what a new request would displace); **decision record** (the decision, its rationale, the options and who agreed); **product backlog** (the ordered list of work the product owner prioritizes).
